Rutherford takes Pretoria to their first win this SA20 season in a massive 85-run win over reigning champs MICT.
MICT was required to finish the SA20’s most successful chase for the second straight home game, but they failed to accomplish so this time. The reigning champions are at the bottom of the table, trading positions with the Pretoria Capitals, and have not won in three games. In their third game, the Highveld squad won for the first time in the competition, primarily because of an outstanding batting display.
Before Shai Hope and Wihan Lubbe’s 88-run fourth-wicket partnership propelled them to 126 for 4 in the fifteenth over, they were in early trouble at 38 for 3 in the fifth over.
Hope and Lubbe were both removed prior to the last overs, although this just served to highlight the Capitals’ finishers. The Capitals reached 220 thanks to a remarkable partnership between Dewald Brevis and Sherfane Rutherford, who scored 84 off just 27 balls, including 72 runs in the final three overs.
MICT made a fist of it, but just for the first half, just like they did in the tournament opener when they were chasing 233. On the final day of 2025, they were ahead of the asking rate at 100 for 2 in the ninth over, but they lost 7 for 35 to prevent their home audience from having an early celebration. The Capitals won all five points available, but they didn’t even get to enjoy the satisfaction of not giving up a bonus point.
