Ahead of the 2026 IPL season, Punjab Kings (PBKS) have hired former India legspinner Sairaj Bahutule as their new spin bowling coach. He takes over for Sunil Joshi, who served in that capacity from 2023 to 2025.
Since Joshi will be taking over as spin coach at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, he made the decision to depart.
Bahutule joins a backroom staff that includes Trevor Gonsalves as assistant bowling coach, James Hopes as fast bowling coach, Brad Haddin as assistant coach, and Ricky Ponting as head coach.
“Sairaj’s deep understanding of the game, particularly his extensive experience in grooming domestic bowlers and managing strategy, will be invaluable to our side,” PBKS CEO Satish Menon said. “His expertise aligns perfectly with our vision of building a strong and cohesive bowling unit for the season ahead.”
“I’m really excited to join Punjab Kings as a spin bowling coach for the upcoming IPL season,” Bahutule said. “This is a team that plays a different brand of cricket, and I can see the potential is massive. They have a bunch of talented players, and I’m looking forward to working with them to refine their skills and help them reach new heights.”
Bahutule coached the Rajasthan Royals’ spin bowling in the 2025 Indian Premier League. Prior to joining the National Cricket Academy and working as support staff for India A assignments, he was also the spin bowling coach for RR from 2018 to 2021.
Dravid’s departure as head coach of RR was followed by Bahutule’s departure. In Dravid’s place is Kumar Sangakkara.
After dominating the league phase points table, PBKS finished second in the 2025 Indian Premier League. Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated them by six runs in the championship match.
