Sam Curran added to England T20I squads as Ben Duckett takes break.
Sam Curran has been called up by England for their Twenty20 International matches against South Africa and Ireland, and Ben Duckett has been given an additional week off because to his sharp decline in form.
Despite not playing in any format for England this season or being coached by Brendon McCullum, Sam Curran has been playing well at home. He has been included in the teams for all six of England’s forthcoming matches after making 24 appearances in the T20 Blast and the Hundred this summer, scoring 603 runs at a strike rate of 154.21 and taking 33 inexpensive wickets.
His call-up comes just 24 hours after South Africa’s second ODI at Lord’s on Thursday revealed England’s excessive dependence on Will Jacks and Jacob Bethell, who play part-time spin. Curran’s inclusion in the squad allows England greater options with regard to the balance of their team, while Bethell and Jacks recorded combined statistics of 1 for 112 in 10 overs.
Duckett, on the other hand, has been given an extra week off prior to England’s winter tours of Australia and New Zealand. In the last 12 months, he has established himself as a regular in all formats, but Thursday’s surprisingly scratchy innings of 14 off 33 balls left him looking completely out of sorts.
England has made a last squad change by removing Matthew Potts from the Ireland T20Is. This will enable him to make a stronger argument for Durham’s Ashes selection in the County Championship. Jamie Overton’s decision to retire from red-ball cricket has left a slot open in their team for Australia, and Potts is a serious candidate.
He was not even included in their squads to play India, and he has fallen down the hierarchy across forms. However, a path back may be offered by Overton’s successful exit from the Ashes and bolter Sonny Baker’s difficulties in his ODI debut.
