Samson tips off his hat to Mitchell Starc after death over heroics seen Delhi emerge victorious over the Royals.
Samson retired hurt clutching his side during their dramatic loss to Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
The RR captain claimed he wasn’t in too much trouble at the conclusion of the match, which required a Super Over to decide the winners. “It feels all right,” he said during the presentation after the game. “I simply wasn’t prepared to return and bat here. Perhaps you could check it out tomorrow to see how it is.
Samson attempted to cut legspinner Vipraj Nigam in the sixth over of RR’s chase of 189 but was unsuccessful. He needed the physiotherapist’s treatment right away since he grasped at his left side, around the rib cage.
As a result of Nigam bowling a front-foot no-ball, the subsequent delivery was a free-hit. Samson hit it long-range, but he was too uncomfortable to run this time, so he moved to the side of the field and gripped his side once again. After deciding to retire due to his injuries, Riyan Parag took his place.
After adding 61 for the first wicket with Yashasvi Jaiswal in 5.3 overs, Samson was at 31 off 19 balls at that point. From then on, he was forced to accept a supporting position. With the game on the line once more, Shimron Hetmyer, Parag, and Jaiswal were the batters who went out there, but their 11 runs were insufficient.
In regular time, RR appeared to be the favourites to win. With eight wickets remaining, they required 31 runs from the next three overs. However, Mitchell Starc knocked out a set batsman, Nitish Rana (51), in the 18th over and returned to deliver a 20th over full of yorkers to force extra time.
“I felt that that score was definitely chaseable,” Samson said. “The batting line-up which we had, the start which we had in the powerplay, I felt it was definitely a chaseable score. But I think, as we all saw, some fantastic bowling by Starcy in the last over of the innings. I think that’s quality from the international. One of the best guys around in the world. So I think I would like to give it to Starcy. I think he won the game for them.”
With four points, RR is currently tied for eighth place in the standings with the Mumbai Indians (MI), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Prior to the encounter against DC, they had lost their fifth and sixth games of the season after winning the next two.
In their upcoming schedule, they will play the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at home on April 19, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) away on April 24, and the Gujarat Titans (GT) at home on April 28.
