San Siro to not host the 2027 UEFA Champions League finals amid a raft of concerns with regards to the stadium.
San Siro, the iconic stadium that is home to both AC and Inter Milan will not be hosting the 2027 Champions League Finals.
UEFA had granted Milan an extension to demonstrate that the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza would be open for business during scheduled renovations, which would take place between hosting games at the 2032 European Championship and organising ceremonies for the 2026 Winter Olympics.
The UEFA executive council opted to reopen the bidding process in order to select a suitable venue, as city authorities were unable to provide the necessary guarantees. Milan was not awarded the final.
With the long-term threat of demolition, San Siro’s future has been unknown since it hosted the Champions League final in 2016. AC Milan and Inter Milan, co-tenants, have created designs for the construction of respective stadiums.
By next June, according to UEFA, the ultimate 2027 destination will be selected. The stadium of Bayern Munich and the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary, will host the next two Champions League finals, respectively.
San Siro has a rich history of hosting the Champions League Finals. It has hosted the lucrative event 4 times in the course of its establishment. Apart from the finals in 2001 and 2016, it had also hosted the Finals in 1965 and 1970.
The iconic stadium seats 75,000 fans and was first opened in 1927. AC Milan and Inter have been joint tenants of this stadium since 1947. However, both clubs have begun plans to move into separate stadiums that will be their own.
