Settled India face shaky South Africa in key build-up to T20 World Cup.
South Africa and India have diverged in T20Is since playing in a thrilling T20 World Cup final in 2024. With a 26-4 record (24 outright victories and two Super Over victories), India has undoubtedly improved since winning that trophy. Their style of play is ideal for the circumstances in which they will defend their title in February and March of 2026. Since that day in Barbados, South Africa has won nine and lost sixteen Twenty20 Internationals.
In the run-up to the 2026 competition, the majority of India’s players have a sense of continuity and role clarity. For South Africa, the same cannot be true. Heinrich Klaasen, arguably their most formidable T20I player, retired in recent months, and other important players were sidelined due to injuries and workload management.
They became the first team to let up more than 300 runs in a Full-Member-vs-Full-Member T20I against England at Old Trafford, and they have since lost series to Australia, Pakistan, and Namibia.
In summary, South Africa has a lot of work ahead of them before they start their World Cup campaign against Canada in Ahmedabad on February 9. They will start that effort with one of the most difficult tasks they may encounter in this format: a full-strength India in India. However, they have little to lose in this series, and playing five games in conditions comparable to those they’ll encounter at that event will provide them with a wealth of experience and expertise.
