[Saba Sports News] West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Shane Dowrich announced his retirement from international cricket on Thursday, November 30.
Cricket West Indies (CWI) released a statement, announcing Dowrich’s decision to hang up his boots from international cricket. The 32-year-old was initially named in the West Indies squad for the upcoming ODI series against England, earning a call-up after almost three years.
However, now that he has bid adieu to the internationals, his name also got withdrawn from the contingent for the England assignment.
The West Indies will play versus England with a 14-player squad as they have chosen to not pick a replacement for Dowrich.
“We want to thank Shane for contribution when he played for West Indies. He is a disciplined, hard-working cricketer who always gave his utmost in front and behind the stumps. He had a memorable series in 2019 when he made an outstanding Test century on home soil in Barbados to help us beat England and win the Wisden Trophy. We respect his decision to retire and appreciate it is not an easy one to make. We wish him all the best as he steps away from the international stage,” the CWI Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe said as quoted in the issued press release.
Dowrich featured in 35 Tests and a solitary ODI for the West Indies since making his debut in 2015. His last appearance in the Windies jersey came in 2020, when he played a Test against New Zealand in Hamilton. He amassed 1,570 Test runs at an average of 29.07 in his career, including three hundreds and nine fifties.
Notably, the West Indies are set to host England for a three-match ODI series, starting on December 3 in Antigua. It will be followed by five T20Is with the first of these fixtures scheduled on December 13 in Barbados.
