Shay Given publicly apologises for ill-timed holocaust comment after comparing Nancy’s time as Celtic manager as an “absolute Holocaust”
Shay Given, a former goalie for the Premier League, has “unreservedly” apologised for calling Wilfried Nancy’s brief tenure as Celtic manager a “absolute Holocaust” during a live broadcast on the BBC program Final Score.
Given, 49, was asked to comment on Nancy’s dismissal after leading the Scottish champions for just 33 days and eight games.
The former Republic of Ireland international claimed that the term “was terrible from start to finish” before disparaging Nancy’s first week in the position, who is 48 years old.
Posting on X,, external Given said he used a word he “didn’t fully understand the meaning of, and certainly won’t ever use again”.
He added: “We all have areas of ignorance in our knowledge, and I hope to use this as an opportunity to become better educated going forward.
“I am genuinely mortified and apologise unreservedly to everyone offended, and will be donating my fee from today’s show to the Holocaust Educational Trust.”
