Sheffield Wednesday face 12-point deduction after filing administration notice.
According to court documents, Sheffield Wednesday has submitted a notification to designate an administrator. The notice was submitted to a specialised companies court on Friday at 10:01 a.m.
Due to the club’s well-documented financial problems under owner Dejphon Chansiri, there were rumours that HMRC would soon issue a winding-up order. The Insolvency and Companies Court, a specialised court within the high court, has now received a notification to designate an administrator.
Although they did not immediately comment, Wednesday is anticipated to issue a statement soon. The team would lose 12 points for going into administration under EFL regulations. Wednesday, now at the bottom of the Championship, would have -6 points as a result.
In August, the EFL expressed its serious concerns regarding the club’s financial status. Wednesday started the season with just 15 first-team players after manager Danny Röhl and a number of important players left in the summer.
Thousands of Wednesday fans did not attend the home game against Middlesbrough two days ago, while many more skipped a Carabao Cup home match against Leeds in protest of Chansiri, who replaced Milan Mandaric in 2015. Although Chansiri has stated that he is open to selling, he has turned down at least two offers because they fall short of his asking price.
After winning promotion to the Championship in 2023, Wednesday will have a difficult time avoiding a return to the third division. Five times this year, including in September, the club has been subject to various EFL embargoes due to tax arrears and for not paying players and staff on time.
Wednesday was demoted to League One in the 2020–21 season after losing six points for violating the EFL’s sustainability and profitability regulations.
