Shreyas hurts his rib-cage, taken to hospital for further assessment after the incident in the 34th over of Australia’s innings.
During the third ODI between Australia and India in Sydney, India’s vice-captain Shreyas Iyer sustained an injury to his left rib cage. According to the BCCI, he “has been taken to hospital for further evaluation and assessment.”
Iyer made a spectacular catch to remove Alex Carey off Harshit Rana in the 34th over of Australia’s innings at the SCG, causing the injury. A top edge pushed the ball high between deep third and backward point after Carey tried to slam it down the ground.
While holding the grab, Iyer monitored the ball from rearward position, diving as it dropped over his head and ran at full force. He had to be helped by the physiotherapist when he gripped his side in agony and left the pitch before the next ball was bowled.
Australia was dismissed for 236 in 46.4 overs, and Iyer did not play again for the rest of the innings. Iyer did not have to bat in the chase as India won by nine wickets in the 39th over thanks to an unbroken 168-run partnership between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for the second wicket. The series was won 2-1 by Australia.
