Shreyas Iyer in contention for an India A call-up that will take on Australia A, but with uncertainty on his role.
Recently, Shreyas Iyer was in the news, though not necessarily because of his actions. Following the Asia Cup snub for the in-form batter, there was a surge of positive stories and sympathetic debates across the country, but that may not have been much consolation. Strangely enough, he was still excluded from the continental T20 championship. However, a chance appears to be calling. After all, the Australians are travelling to India.
Every time the selectors get together to choose a side, the Iyer issue will be the main topic of discussion. However, that does not mean that he will be chosen to play for India A against Australia A. What role he is given is the main concern.
Next week, the Australians will visit India, where they will play three white ball matches after two four-day red ball matches.
Iyer is playing for West Zone vs Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy match in Bengaluru right now. He was dismissed for 25 by Khaleel Ahmed in the first innings, which was a pretty lacklustre performance. However, it seems unlikely that the short but windy knock will affect his selection in any way, if not for the three white-ball matches, then at least for the two red-ball games.
Despite being one of the best batters in the IPL, Iyer was not selected for the Asia Cup T20 team, which began play in the United Arab Emirates on September 9. However, the fact that he appears to be in the running for red-ball contests suggests that he will be considered for upcoming games, whether it’s the October home Test series against the West Indies or the ensuing away white-ball series in Australia.
In addition to Iyer, the best players from the current Duleep Trophy can be chosen. such as Sai Sudharsan, A Easwaran, and Nitish Reddy. The selectors may be considering players like Rajat Patidar, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and N Jagadeesan, among others.
Just one day after the Duleep Trophy final, which begins on September 11, is set to end, the first of India A and Australia A’s two four-day matches begins in Lucknow on September 16. The selection process will therefore probably take place a few days following the current semifinals, which conclude on September 7. Three white-ball matches will take place in Kanpur on September 30, October 3, and October 5, after the second red-ball tournament, which will take place in Lucknow from September 23 to 26.
