Shreyas Iyer in Sydney hospital after laceration to spleen.
Following a splenic laceration, India batsman Shreyas Iyer is still being watched and cared for at a hospital in Sydney. Iyer is stable but is under observation in the Intensive Care Unit [ICU], and there is currently no set timetable for his release.
“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen,” a BCCI release said. “He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI medical team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress.”
During India’s third ODI match against Australia in Sydney, he made a catch sprinting backwards from point to dismiss Alex Carey, and he was injured on impact. Iyer grabbed his rib cage and motioned for help right away, then walked away with assistance.
He was removed from the pitch right away and didn’t come back for the rest of Australia’s innings. In a brief statement at the time, the BCCI stated that he had been brought to the hospital for “further evaluation and assessment” by their medical team. It’s currently unknown when Shreyas will be able to play again.
While the other ODI experts departed Australia on Monday, one member of the BCCI’s medical staff is still in Sydney with Shreyas. The members of India’s T20I team have left for Canberra, where they trained for the first time on Tuesday. India lost the three-match series 2-1 after losing the opening two matches in Perth and Adelaide, but they won the third ODI by nine wickets.
The three-match T20I series kicks underway on October 29 in Canberra, followed by matches in Melbourne and Hobart. The T20I team does not include Shreyas. India’s next match is an ODI series against South Africa, which starts in Ranchi on November 30.
