[Saba Sports News] Sikandar Raza, the veteran Zimbabwean cricketer, made history as the first man from his country to claim a hat-trick in T20I cricket. His achievement came during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Region Qualifier 2023 against Rwanda, where he dismissed Muhammad Nadir, Zappy Bimenyimana, and Emile Rukiriza. Raza’s all-round excellence was pivotal in Zimbabwe’s commanding 144-run victory, keeping their hopes alive for qualifying for the T20 World Cup 2024.
Raza, along with Tadiwanashe Marumani, provided a solid start for Zimbabwe. Ryan Burl’s unbeaten 44 helped set a formidable total of 215 runs. Rwanda, in response, struggled with their chase, largely due to Richard Ngarava’s impressive bowling and Raza’s crucial final three wickets. Zimbabwe, currently fourth in the points table behind Namibia, Uganda, and Kenya, needs exceptional performances to secure a spot in the next year’s mega tournament in the West Indies and USA.
In the IPL context, Raza was retained by Punjab Kings for the 2024 season. Despite a mixed performance in IPL 2023, where he scored 119 runs and took three wickets in seven matches, the franchise showed faith in him. His recent hat-trick and valuable runs in the qualifier underscore his potential. Raza’s continued form is vital for both Zimbabwe’s World Cup qualification and his role in the PBKS team in the upcoming IPL season.
