Skinner will not ‘overemphasise’ defeat after Man Utd fall flat as they suffer their first WSL season loss against Villa.
A few days ago, Marc Skinner was enthusiastically praising his Manchester United players for their impressive start to the season.
He said they were “playing better football than we’ve probably ever played,” as enthralled with their play as much as their free-scoring, which has propelled them to the top of the goalscoring statistics.
Following United’s 1-0 loss to Aston Villa and a poor showing in the Women’s Super League (WSL), the United manager’s song was unavoidably more depressing.
“Flat. It was very flat,” Skinner succinctly put it
Skinner realised that United had lost this chance as the people in red shirts trudged off the pitch at the Leigh Sports Village, their faces looking like a rainy weekend in the fall sunshine.
Due to Chelsea’s 1-1 tie with Arsenal, United would have won if they had defeated Villa. Rather, they trail the reigning champions by three points.
Will Skinner regret it later in the season, when the difference between success and failure could be more pronounced? Maybe.
“To think about the table now is a bit crazy. We don’t really look at other teams so we don’t care about other results,” insisted United captain Maya le Tissier.
“You are going to have flat performances. But I don’t want to overemphasise the situation,” he explained.
“Sometimes these [results] happen. I thought Villa’s goal was a scrappy, scruffy, goal from a set-piece. It happens and sometimes it goes against you.”
