Sophie Devine set to miss the WPL due to a break from the game where she will also be missing the Super Smash.
Sophie Devine, the New Zealand skipper and all-rounder has decided to take a break from cricket, thereby ruling her out of the upcoming WPL for RCB.
Her absence will also impact her chances of participating in the domestic Super Smash tournament, where she represents Wellington. Devine has scored 38 runs and also taken 8 wickets in her time at the Super Smash. In her last game, she took 5 wickets to ensure Wellington beat Canterbury.
“Player well-being is paramount to us – it takes precedence over everything else,” Liz Green, NZC’s head of women’s high performance development, said. “Sophie’s had excellent support from the New Zealand Cricket Players Association and from our own high performance unit staff, and everyone agrees this is the best option available.
“The most important thing for NZC is that Sophie has a decent break, receives good support and care, and is fit and well before returning to professional cricket”.
Devine has been constantly playing cricket for the white Ferns since winning the Women’s T20 World Cup in October. She played against India in the 3-match ODI series and then also played the T20 series against Australia in the latter days of December.
She was retained by Royal Challengers Bengaluru after playing an integral part in their title-winning run last season. Devine was one of their key performers with both bat and ball, scoring 136 runs along with 6 wickets in the 10 games she played in the 2024 season.
RCB will be opening their 2025 WPL campaign against the Gujarat Giants in the newly-constructed BCA stadium in Vadodara on 15th February.
