South Africa set to ring in the changes by bringing a host of new and fresh faces into the side for the Afghanistan and Ireland series.
The management has made the decision to widen the current player pool for white-ball cricket, which explains the raft of new faces in the squads.
None of Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj, Anrich Nortje, Marco Jansen, Tabraiz Shamsi, Gerald Coetzee, David Miller, or Heinrich Klaasen will feature in either the ODI or T20I squads.
Jason Smith and legspinner Nqabayomzi Peter have been included in the ODI squad.
The second new face is seam-bowling all-rounder Andile Simelane, a 21-year-old who was chosen in the ODI and T20I squads against Afghanistan and has recently played for South Africa’s Emerging and ‘A’ sides.
Quinton de Kock, who has not officially announced his retirement from Twenty20 Internationals, is not included in the lineup.
Lungi Ngidi, who sustained a right calf injury during the Caribbean tour, has healed and is anticipated to spearhead the assault.
The only other player from the West Indies T20I series who isn’t going on this tour is Donovan Ferreira; Matthew Breetzke is part of the T20I team.
The ODI squad for the series against Afghanistan includes Aiden Markram, Reeza Hendricks, and Simelane; they are not included for the series against Ireland.
Ryan Rickelton and Rassie van der Dussen are only there during the Ireland ODIs.
“We have decided to give opportunities to some of the fringe players as well as those who have impressed in recent weeks and months,” Rob Walter, South Africa’s white-ball coach, said in a statement.
“This has been a deliberate move from management, in line with our goal of building a wider pool of players to choose from, as we prepare for the major ICC tournaments taking place over the next 18 months, with a long-term view on the 50-over World Cup in 2027.”
