Sporting Lisbon sack Ruben Amorim’s replacement after just eight games.
Rui Borges was named Sporting’s new head coach after João Pereira was fired by the Portuguese champions on Boxing Day. The new head coach has agreed to a deal that will run through June 2026, with a one-year extension option.
After Ruben Amorim left for Manchester United in November, Pereira took over as manager of Sporting for eight games, but they only won three of them. Sporting suffered back-to-back Champions League losses and dropped to second place in the Primeira Liga behind rivals Benfica.
After Sporting paid fellow Portuguese top-flight team Vitoria Guimaraes €4.1 million to acquire the 43-year-old’s services, Borges, Pereira’s replacement, now leads the team.
After coaching many Portuguese clubs, Borges took over as Vitoria’s manager in May. He led them to the Conference League knockout stages, when they ended the group stage as one of just two clubs without a loss, along with Chelsea of England.
“The time for me is right,” Borges said at his unveiling. “It’s always right. I’m very positive, I believe things happen when they have to. It’s an opportunity we’ve all worked for.
“I’m the leader of the Portuguese champions and I couldn’t be happier. I look at the squad and it’s the best – it’s not even time to talk about signings.”
Sporting next host Benfica in a top-of-the-table clash on Sunday.
