Suarez slapped with 6-game ban after Seattle incident that saw him spit on a Seattle Sounders staffer post-game.
Luis Suarez, a forward for Inter Miami, was suspended for six games after spitting at a Seattle Sounders employee after his team lost the Leagues Cup final 3-0.
Following a brawl between the two teams that was started by the Uruguayan, the event occurred just after the game’s full-time whistle on August 31.
Before teammate Sergio Busquets hit the Mexico international on the chin, Suarez seized Sounders player Obed Vargas by the neck.
Shortly after, he got into a fight with Sounders security director Gene Ramirez. Oscar Ustari, a teammate, restrained Suarez before he spat in Ramirez’s face.Suarez, 38, a former striker for Barcelona and Liverpool, issued an apology on his Instagram account for his actions.
Although Major League Soccer “reserves the right” to impose further sanctions, the Leagues Cup disciplinary committee stated that Suarez’s suspension will only be applicable for the tournament’s next year.
Teams from the MLS and Liga MX in Mexico compete in the Leagues Cup every year.
Tomas Aviles and Sergio Busquets, Suarez’s teammates at Inter Miami, have been suspended for three and two games, respectively.
Due to his involvement in multiple situations over his career, Suarez is no stranger to controversy.
Suarez received an eight-match suspension while at Liverpool in 2011 after being found guilty of racially abusing Patrice Evra, a full-back for Manchester United.
Additionally, he was banned for three different instances of biting while playing for Uruguay, Liverpool, and Ajax.
