Swansea City part ways with Luke Williams amid horror run of form that sees them precariously close to the relegation spots.
Swansea City sack head coach Luke Williams after dismal run of form seen them lose 7 of their last 9 games.
The Championship club also cancelled a much-anticipated fans’ forum that was set for Tuesday as a result of the dismissal.
Williams leaves following a string of poor performances and a challenging January transfer window in which the team lost out on a number of targets after approving the sale of their veteran captain Matt Grimes to Coventry, who are vying for a spot in the playoffs. Supporters’ dissatisfaction with the club’s management is growing.
At the end of the previous season, Swansea was just four points out of the playoffs, but their 3-1 loss to struggling Stoke on Saturday was Williams’ final game as manager. After his club took four points out of the final 27 available, he exits 14 months into a three-and-a-half-year contract.
Less than a week has passed since Richard Montague was appointed director of football. Williams collaborated with Montague on his path to promotion to the Football League with Notts County in 2022–2023. Williams stated that he had no part in Montague’s coming, but he did predict that he “would help a huge amount.”
Williams’ assistant Ryan Harley and analyst George Lawtey were also fired, leaving Swansea’s first-team coach Alan Sheehan in interim leadership. After Michael Duff left in December 2023, Sheehan took over as temporary manager and led the team to three victories in seven games.
The fans’ forum has been rescheduled for March 3rd, and Swansea has stated that the appointment process for Williams’ replacement has begun. The hunt is being led by Montague, Andy Coleman, and the under-pressure chairman.
