Taiwo Awoniyi undergoes immediate surgery for serious abdominal injury suffered during the PL Leicester game.
After suffering a severe abdomen injury during Sunday’s encounter against Leicester, Taiwo Awoniyi underwent emergency surgery on Monday night.
Late in Forest’s 2-2 Premier League tie with their East Midlands rivals at the City Ground, the Nigerian international struck the post. Given the severity of the damage, which is thought to not be life-threatening, the surgery had to be done quickly.
After a few minutes of therapy, Awoniyi attempted to resume playing, but Monday’s evaluation by medical personnel revealed the full degree of the injuries.
After the game, the Forest owner came onto the field and challenged manager Nuno Espírito Santo, which was the basis of Evelos Marinakis’s annoyance. Forest was attempting to score a late goal that would have been crucial to their chances of winning the Champions League, but Awoniyi was unable to move correctly when he returned to action. Marinakis was dissatisfied because no replacement was offered.
To exacerbate the situation, Anthony Elanga was given the opportunity to progress on goal even though he was obviously offside, which led to the incident in which Leicester midfielder Facundo Buonanotte also collided with the upright. Both players collided with the post quickly as play resumed after the assistant referee postponed raising the flag.
Forest’s dreams of qualifying for the Champions League were dashed, and the day was depressing. Unless Aston Villa, Manchester City, or Newcastle lose points along the line, winning their next two games—including a match against Chelsea on the final day—might not be enough.
Forest, however, are assured of at least a place in the Conference League, in which they would play their European football since 1995-96.
