Shubman Gill was in outstanding form on Day 3 of the first Test between India and Bangladesh in Chennai, silencing his critics with a dominant century.
Batting at No. 3, Gill scored an unbeaten 119* off 176 balls, laced with 10 fours and four sixes. His performance even impressed former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal, who said on JioCinema, “There’s a calmness about him. Even after reaching the hundred, with every ball he faced, that calmness was still there. He played some excellent shots, a lovely innings.”
Iqbal added, “Yes, people are talking about Rishabh Pant’s sixes and fours, but how well has Gill batted? I can’t forget the pull shot he played yesterday—it was unbelievable. The drives and his calmness were the best part. Though I don’t know him personally, he seems like a very calm man.”
Gill and Pant spearheaded India’s second innings, with Pant smashing 109 off 128 balls, including 13 fours and four sixes. India declared at 287/4, leaving Bangladesh at 158/4 at stumps, trailing by 357 runs.
Gill became the first Indian to score a century against Bangladesh after recording a duck in the first innings, and it was his second century in his last four second-innings appearances for India.
R Ashwin, who had already scored a century in the first innings, took three wickets for India. Najmul Hossain Shanto (51*) and Shakib Al Hasan (5*) will resume for Bangladesh on Day 4 after bad light ended the final session of Day 3.
