Legendary Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal has hinted at a potential return to international cricket after stepping away from the game in 2023. The 35-year-old’s sudden exit surprised both fans and the cricketing community.
A brief return, coupled with a public disagreement with then-captain Shakib Al Hasan, led to his absence from the 2023 ODI World Cup. However, with encouragement from newly appointed Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Faruque Ahmed, talks of Tamim’s comeback have gained momentum.
Reflecting on his possible return, Tamim said, “The way I finished wasn’t pleasant. If I come back, I need a purpose. I’m not someone who would return just for the sake of it and play four or five games. What’s the point? If I turn up for a few matches, will that really help Bangladesh cricket? There needs to be a proper plan.”
Tamim suggested that any approach from the BCB should involve clear goals, like aiming for the semifinals of the 2025 Champions Trophy. He also emphasized the importance of resolving differences among senior players.
“If the BCB says we want to qualify for the semifinals and it will be the last tournament for senior players, regardless of differences, then we can talk.”
Under the leadership of new captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, Bangladesh has performed well, reaching the Super 8 stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup and winning a Test series 2-0 against Pakistan. Tamim, however, stressed that any approach should come from both the board and the players.
“I play for the team, not just the board. The players also need to be welcoming.”
Tamim also expressed disappointment over missing the 2023 ODI World Cup, despite attempts to resolve his issues with Shakib. “Differences can exist, but for the national interest, everyone should unite. Sadly, that didn’t happen,” he concluded.
