Thomas Rew named England U19 skipper for U19 World Cup as he returns after missing Caribbean tour while with England Lions.
Thomas Rew to lead England at Under-19s World Cup.
The highly regarded wicketkeeper-batter from Somerset, Thomas Rew, will lead England in the upcoming Under-19 World Cup, which will take place in Namibia and Zimbabwe in January and February.
Due to his engagement with the England Lions in Australia, Rew, 18, was unable to attend the recent trip of the West Indies, when the England Under-19s were defeated 5-2. Having played for Somerset during the summer while still 17, he made his first-class debut earlier this month in the Lions’ match against Australia A, scoring 19 and 47.
Although Thomas was chosen to wear the gloves at Allan Border Field, he is the younger brother of James Rew, another wicketkeeper-batter who participated in the Lions trip. In June, he scored a century against India in 73 balls, shattering the record for the fastest England U19 century.
Farhan Ahmed, an offspinner from Nottinghamshire and the younger brother of England player Rehan, will serve as vice-captain after leading the team in the Caribbean. Ali Farooq, an uncapped left-arm spinner from Leicestershire, is the only new addition to the 15-man roster for the World Cup.
“This is an amazing opportunity for the players we have selected to not only wear an England shirt at a World Cup but also to go out and try and do something special,” England U19s head coach, Mike Yardy, said.
“We have a balanced squad with a core group of players who already have county experience and who have developed a camaraderie while playing together for the U19s that will serve them well during the tournament.
“I really want the players to enjoy the opportunity to play at a World Cup, in a beautiful country like Zimbabwe, and to embrace the chance to compete against different countries and show their quality.”
