Tony Galvin, former Ireland and Spurs player battling from stroke as he is ‘now recovering’ as club sends best wishes.
According to the club, former Tottenham winger Tony Galvin is recuperating from a stroke.
The 69-year-old won back-to-back FA Cups in 1981 and 1982 while making 273 appearances for Spurs during the 1980s. Galvin started all four games, and both of those finals—against Manchester City and QPR, respectively—went to replays. Ricky Villa’s spectacular, well-known solo move and shot won the game against City, but it was an offensive sequence of play that started with a characteristic Galvin charge down the left wing.
Additionally, he started both legs of the 1984 Uefa Cup final against Anderlecht, which ended in a 2-2 aggregate and a penalty shootout that Spurs won 4-3 following Galvin’s substitution in the second half.
Galvin played in all three of Jack Charlton’s group matches at Euro 1988, including his team’s much anticipated 1-0 victory over England, and earned 29 caps for the Republic of Ireland despite having attended an England school as a child.
He joined Sheffield Wednesday in 1987 and left in 1989 to play for Swindon under Ossie Ardiles, a former Spurs teammate. Later, Galvin worked as the Argentinian’s assistant at Newcastle and Swindon.
Spurs posted on X: “Everyone at the club would like to extend their thoughts and best wishes to Tony Galvin, our 1984 UEFA Cup and 1981 & 82 FA Cup winner, who is now recovering following a stroke. We’re all behind you, Tony.”
