Van Neikerk to play in WCPL for Guyana Amazon Warriors, with the all-rounder playing the tournament for the first time since 2023.
Dane van Niekerk named in Guyana Amazon Warriors squad for WCPL 2025.
The Guyana Amazon Warriors have selected South African all-rounder Dane van Niekerk for the 2025 Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL). In place of Shabnim Ismail, Lauren Winfield-Hill, and Madeline Penna, the team announced van Niekerk, Ireland wicketkeeper-batter Amy Hunter, and New Zealand medium-pacer Molly Penfold.
Van Niekerk will be playing in a franchise league for the first time since August 2023, when she participated in the women’s Hundred. She also participated in the Women’s Premier League’s first season in 2023, signing with Royal Challengers Bengaluru but not playing a single game before being cut loose before the 2024 campaign. She will be playing in the WCPL for the first time.
After returning to domestic cricket, Van Niekerk recently changed her mind about retiring internationally. She participated in a training camp with the South African national side, but she will not be playing in the ODI World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, which starts on September 30. After failing to fulfil fitness standards and being excluded from South Africa’s squad for the 2023 home T20 World Cup, she first declared her retirement from international competition.
Mandla Mashimbyi, the head coach of South Africa, has stated that she is being considered for upcoming series.
With one hundred and fifty runs, Van Niekerk, who played for Western Province during the 2024–25 domestic season, came in fourth on the list of the CSA Women Pro20 Series’ top scorers.
On Saturday, the Warriors will play the Trinbago Knight Riders in Providence to begin WCPL 2025.
