Varun Chakravarthy takes top spot in men’s T20I bowling rankings.
After going 1 for 4 against the United Arab Emirates and 1 for 24 against Pakistan in the current Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates, India wristspinner Varun Chakravarthy has risen to the top of the ICC’s men’s T20I rankings. After legspinner Ravi Bishnoi and bowler Jasprit Bumrah, he is the third Indian bowler to reach the top spot.
The 34-year-old Chakravarthy passed Jacob Duffy, a fast bowler from New Zealand, who had held the top spot since March. After taking one wicket in his first two Asia Cup games, Nuwan Thushara, a fast player for Sri Lanka, also moved up six spots to sixth place.
Following the ICC’s weekly ranking update, Afghanistan’s Noor Ahmad is ranked 25th, Pakistan’s legspinner Abrar Ahmed jumped 11 spots to 16th, India’s left-arm spinner Axar Patel is up one rank to 12th, Pakistan’s left-arm wristspinner Sufiyan Muqeem has risen four spots to 11th, and Kuldeep Yadav has gained 16 spots to finish 23rd.
Abhishek Sharma, the opener for India, has solidified his hold on the top spot among T20I hitters after smashing 30 off 16 balls against the United Arab Emirates and 31 off 13 balls against Pakistan during the Asia Cup.
Jos Buttler and Phil Salt, the openers for England, have both risen to second and third place. In the second Twenty20 International against South Africa at Old Trafford, England dominated 304 for 2, with Salt scoring 141 not out off 60 balls, their best T20I score and fastest century, and Buttler scoring 83 off 30 balls. Buttler is making his debut appearance in the top three in the ICC’s T20I batting rankings.
