Vivianne Miedema gives huge jolt to Man City women after undergoing surgical procedure to repair her left knee.
Vivianne Miedema has undergone surgery on her left knee. The news has been confirmed by her club Manchester City.
According to a club statement, the Dutch international, who joined City from Arsenal in the summer after her contract expired, will now “begin a period of rehabilitation at the City Football Academy, working closely with the Club’s medical team.” The nature and severity of the damage have not yet been revealed.
With two goals, including in City’s 2-2 opening-day draw with Arsenal, and one assist in five games, Miedema has enjoyed a great start to life in Manchester. “We at City wish Viv a complete and quick recovery,” the statement read.
The forward missed City’s last three games due to a “slight niggle,” and as a result, was left out of the Netherlands’ squad for the international window, according to manager Gareth Taylor.
After sustaining an ACL injury during Arsenal’s Champions League defeat to Lyon in December 2022—one month after her partner, Beth Mead, had also sustained the same injury—Miedema was unable to compete in the 2023 World Cup.
Ten months later, in the Gunners’ victory over Bristol City in the WSL, 28-year-old Miedema returned to duty. The forward had minor knee surgery in March, which kept her out for several weeks, so the road to full recovery has not been easy.
