Perth’s historic WACA Ground is on the brink of a major transformation as the extensive redevelopment project moves into its final stages. Scheduled to open ahead of the 2025–26 summer season, the iconic venue is evolving from a traditional cricket ground into a vibrant multi-purpose community hub, blending sporting excellence with cultural and recreational amenities.
A key highlight of the project is the inclusion of a resort-style aquatic centre designed to make the venue a year-round destination. The facility will feature a 50-metre outdoor pool, an indoor learn-to-swim pool, leisure pools, water slides, and splash areas, all integrated within the stadium’s open precinct. The aim is to provide not just a sports facility but a shared public space for the wider Perth community.
Beyond the swimming complex, the redevelopment adds several new elements: a high-performance training centre for elite cricket, a modern pavilion with indoor and outdoor seating areas, a dedicated museum celebrating the WACA’s rich cricketing history, and improved accessibility features, including sensory rooms and all-abilities playgrounds. These additions are designed to ensure the venue serves both professional athletes and the local population.
One of the most significant cultural elements is a tribute to the New Norcia Invincibles, the Aboriginal cricket team who famously walked over 130 kilometres in the late 19th century to compete in Perth. A bronze statue of team captain Joseph Nogolgot will stand prominently at the entrance, honouring their pioneering spirit and ensuring their legacy is woven into the venue’s future. Indigenous artworks and cultural narratives will also be integrated throughout the site, reflecting Western Australia’s heritage.
The redevelopment is part of the broader Perth City Deal initiative, supported by WA Cricket, Cricket Australia, the City of Perth, and both state and federal governments. It aligns with the vision of making the WACA a 10,000-seat boutique venue capable of hosting cricket, other sports, and community events, with the capacity to expand to 15,000 for major fixtures.
For Perth residents, the upgraded WACA will offer more than a match-day experience. It’s designed to serve as a hub for fitness, recreation, and cultural engagement, hosting community programs, local events, and offering amenities such as cafés, health and wellness spaces, and family-friendly facilities.
As the redevelopment nears completion, the WACA stands poised to enter a new era. By balancing its storied cricketing history with a bold vision for community integration, the ground will become a unique blend of tradition and modernity. The addition of the aquatic centre and the powerful homage to the New Norcia Invincibles signal that this is not just a renovation, but a reimagining of what a sporting venue can represent for both sport and society.
