[Saba Sports News] The Women’s Premier League (WPL) is gearing up for its highly anticipated second season, following a successful inaugural run that captured widespread attention and viewership. Franchises and owners are already immersed in preparations, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announcing the auction date for the upcoming season on Friday.
Scheduled for December 9 in Mumbai, the WPL auction will be a pivotal moment for all five teams as they seek to make strategic moves within the confines of the BCCI-imposed salary cap of INR 13.5 crore. A total of 60 players have retained their positions in their respective teams, while 29 players have been released
In terms of financial dynamics, the purse sizes vary among teams. Gujarat Giants, having finished at the bottom of the points table last season, possess the largest salary cap at Rs. 5.95 crore, with 10 slots to fill. In contrast, the defending champions, Mumbai Indians, have the smallest remaining purse at Rs. 2.1 crore with five slots to be filled.
Delhi Capitals have a purse of Rs. 2.25 crore. The remaining two franchises, Royal Challengers Bangalore and UP Warriorz, have Rs. 3.35 crore and Rs. 4 crore at their disposal, respectively.
While the specific start date for the tournament is yet to be disclosed by the board, there’s speculation that it will likely take place in February-March next year, just preceding the commencement of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
