[Saba Sports News] Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has been ruled out of the remainder of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 due to an injury. He will travel back to his home country to start his rehabilitation.
The 36-year-old all-rounder sustained a finger injury while batting during the World Cup 2023 match against Sri Lanka on Monday at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. However, he continued to bat despite being in pain. After making 82 runs off 65 balls, he was dismissed by Angelo Mathews.
Following the match, medical scans revealed that Shakib had fractured his left index finger, leading the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to make a tough decision to rule him out of the tournament. It is worth noting that Bangladesh have already been eliminated from the ongoing World Cup with their only one match remaining against Australia in Pune on 11th November.
Nevertheless, BCB has announced wicketkeeper-batter Anamul Haque as Shakib’s replacement. Anamul, aged 30, has represented the Bangla Tigers in 45 ODI matches, accumulating 1258 runs with an average of 29.95. His last ODI appearance was in the Asia Cup 2023 versus India.
The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 has given the green light to Anamul to replace Shakib in the Bangladesh squad.
Bangladesh team’s physio Bayjedul Islam Khan provided insights into Shakib’s injury, stating that an X-ray revealed a fracture on the left PIP joint of his finger. The estimated recovery time for Shakib is three to four weeks. He is set to depart for Bangladesh to begin his rehabilitation.
“Shakib was struck on his left index finger early in his innings but continued to bat with supportive taping and painkillers. He underwent an emergency X-ray in Delhi after the game which confirmed the fracture on the left PIP joint. Recovery is estimated at three to four weeks. He will leave for Bangladesh today to begin his rehab,” Bayjedul said as quoted by the International Cricket Council.
