Wiaan Mulder has been ruled out from the rest of the Sri Lanka series after fracturing his right middle finger. Matthew Breetzke has been added to the squad as a replacement.a
On the opening ball of the 27th over, Mulder was hurt. He was facing his fifth ball. Lahiru Kumara defended himself by getting one to nip back into Mulder, and his fingers seemed to jam into the handle. He faced two more balls before withdrawing injured after receiving treatment on the pitch during what turned into a ten-minute over.
Before deciding to stop, he left the final ball of that over out and kept the first one. A yorker, out. After South Africa lost Temba Bavuma for the ninth wicket, he stepped out to bat and had to face five more balls to finish at nine not out. A dance down the track to hit Dhananjaya de Silva for six was part of that.
During the lunch break, Mulder was brought for an x-ray, which verified the fracture. His replacement in the field was Ryan Rickelton. South Africa’s plans for a four-seam, one-spinner attack have been impacted by Mulder’s absence. With Keshav Maharaj as the sole specialist spinner, they have three seamers in Gerald Coetzee, Marco Jansen, and Kagiso Rabada. If necessary, Aiden Markram can bowl offspin.
