Yash Dhull makes classy century for Delhi after heart ailment and calls his return to form a “positive sign” ahead of long season.
Yash Dhull has seen a lot in his fledgling career. From being a rare bright spot in a dysfunctional Delhi team, to being captain of said team. Add to that a lean run with the bat which seen him lose the captaincy, it is not a good run.
And if that is not enough, you are then ruled out for a substantial period because of a heart condition.
However, Dhull remained unfazed. He took all these adversities on the chin and bounced back in style. He scored his first domestic hundred in a while that held the Delhi innings together.
Dhull scored 103 runs out of his side’s 264 in response to the gargantuan 674 scored by Tamil Nadu. It is worth noting that this is Dhull’s first competitive tournament of any kind since surgery.
Dhull acknowledged his gratitude to be back in play after a heart operation in July after his Ranji Trophy century. He described it as a “minor” problem, but if left unattended, it may have led to more significant problems down the road.
“This was a very important innings for me because this is after surgery,” Dhull said after the day’s play. “I have seen a lot. When you come back to playing on such a platform and start a new innings, this is good motivation and a positive sign.”
Dhull then shed light on the condition that saw him stay away from the game for a while.
“I got to know it is minor and from birth [congenital]. [But] I am playing at the ground again, this is God’s doing. I am blessed.
“I got to know [of the issue] during a camp at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. This is life. Something or the other happens.
“This was a congenital problem. Normally the surgery happens after birth. Mine has happened very late. That we got to know was very important. Because after the age of 35, this would have harmed. Being back on the field makes me very happy.”
In his 25th first-class game, Dhull—who has captained India’s Under-19 squad in the past—completed his sixth first-class century here. In his most recent game, he scored 10 against Chhattisgarh, his highest total since February. He claimed he was simply trying to bat as normal.
“I haven’t made any changes. I am focusing on doing what I have always done and I believe in that.
“This was a very important innings personally. I told to myself that and visualised [what I would do].”
Delhi will be looking to hold Tamil Nadu off and prevent them from growing their lead at the top of Group D.
